Patrol Division
The patrol division of the Jefferson County Sheriff Department has many functions and answers a wide variety of calls for service—from barking dogs to the most serious of crimes. Every officer responding to a call, whatever the circumstances, puts his or her life on the line so that the community can stay safe.
Each full time deputy at the Sheriff's department has completed a certified police officers recruit academy for law enforcement officers for the state of Tennessee and is certified by the Tennessee Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission. In addition to being P.O.S.T. certified, each officer also attends a minimum of 40 hours in-service training at a certified school on various specialized fields related to law enforcement.
The Patrol division is broken down into three shifts—days, split, and night—which are all overseen by Chief Deputy Bud Mccoig. The Jefferson County Sheriff Department currently has 30 sworn full-time deputies and 22 reserve deputies. The Reserve division is headed by Sgt. Al Herzog.
During the months between April and October our department also has a Deputy that patrols the waters of Douglas and Cherokee Lake. This Deputy is on the water to assist other boaters and to uphold state and local laws.
