The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department is one of the most professional and modern for its size. There are at least six officers on duty at all times, including one supervisor and five deputies. The patrol force numbers nearly 40 deputies and four police investigators. In seasonal weather, the department operates boat patrols on Douglas and Cherokee lakes. There are also outreach programs at the local schools.
